Stephanie Jurkova-Abaco is a dance artist, teacher, and choreographer residing in Mohkinstsis (Calgary) on Treaty 7 Territory. She is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Calgary and is immersed in Decidedly Jazz Dancework’s Professional Training Program.

Stephanie is the founder of Rhythm Embodied, a mobile dance company that teaches curious minds, bodies and hearts to express through movement. Her professional teaching experience began with artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, where she observed and developed safe training protocols, acrobatic understanding, all while instilling a love for dance. For the past six years she has worked at the University of Calgary’s artistic gymnastics club as their dance coach and floor routine choreographer. Her choreography has been sought after and ranked at provincial and Western Canadian competitions.

Her passion for movement began with rhythmic gymnastics, was challenged by the rigid structures of ballroom dance, and has flourished though her training in contemporary and vernacular jazz. As a choreographer, Stephanie is intrigued by unconventional connections – seeking different ways of partnering and negotiating personal space. Her choreographic work has been showcased in IGNITE! Festival for Emerging Artist. Stephanie’s purpose is to spread happiness, share a sustainable approach to movement and help individuals connect to their inner rhythm, regardless of culture, race, or ability.
